Our Story

About Lagos ICC

A community of believers passionate about following Jesus and sharing His love with the world.

The Great Commission

We Are on a Mission to Spread the Good News to Everyone

We believe that the mission of the church is to follow the Great Commission of Jesus Christ as seen in Matthew 28:18-20

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"

— Matthew 28:18-20

Therefore, as Christians who have made Jesus the Lord of our lives, we are committed to obeying the scriptures and helping people of all backgrounds to:

  • Become disciples of Jesus
  • Enter into a saved relationship with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit through baptism
  • Grow in their obedience to God's Word as the Holy Spirit guides them

What We Stand For

Our Core Convictions

These five convictions form the foundation of our faith and practice as a church.

01

We Are A Bible Church, Not Simply A New Testament Church

The principles and lessons of the Old Testament apply to our lives – as much as the New Testament – except for the Mosaic Law and any teaching in the New Testament that supersedes or has fulfilled the Old Testament.

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

— 2 Timothy 3:16-17

"Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction."

— 2 Peter 3:15-16

"When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross."

— Colossians 2:13-14

The words "other Scriptures" in 2 Peter 3:15-16 may refer to the Old Testament, but clearly inferred is that the writings of Paul in the NT are equal to the 'Scriptures.'

Furthermore, Revelation refers to itself as "prophecy" (Revelation 1:3) and we know that comes by the Holy Spirit and the will of God. (2 Peter 1:20-21)

02

Be Silent Where The Bible Speaks, And Speak Where The Bible Is Silent

In applying Scriptural principles to build the visible church, we believe we must obey God's Word, but where the Bible does not prohibit a practice or name, we are free to use our God-given creativity.

"Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name."

— Genesis 2:19

"'I have the right to do anything,' you say – but not everything is beneficial. 'I have the right to do anything' – but not everything is constructive."

— 1 Corinthians 10:23

We are free to practice or name something as long as it does not contradict the Scriptures, it edifies, and it is done in faith. (Romans 14:19,23)

For example: Chemical Recovery, Internet Ministry, AMS (Arts, Sports, Media) Ministry, and "Bible Talks" to build a spiritual family.

The word "Bible" is not in the Bible.

03

Discipling Is A Command Of God And Not Optional

Discipling is God's plan for everyone, not just leaders. It is teaching obedience to Scripture and is detailed in the over 85 "one another" passages. Discipling multiplies the number of people we can reach with the Gospel.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

— Matthew 28:19-20

"He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end, I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me."

— Colossians 1:28-29

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom..."

— Colossians 3:16

"You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."

— 2 Timothy 2:1-2

04

A Central Leadership With A Central Leader

Throughout God's Word, when His people were unified, there was a strong central leadership and a godly central leader. Even from the earliest times, the people needed a central leader to provide direction and unity.

"Moses said to the Lord, 'May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community...' So the Lord said to Moses, 'Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.'"

— Numbers 27:15-23 (Abridged)

"Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens."

— Exodus 18:24-26

"The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul... When they finished, James spoke up. 'Brothers,' he said, 'listen to me' ... 'It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.'"

— Acts 15:13-19 (Abridged)

The New Testament Church was a unified movement as we must be today.

This is achieved by overseeing evangelists with the authority to send Timothy to teach and Titus to appoint leaders, discipline, and teach disciples. (Titus 1:5, 11, 2:1)

In the New Testament, Jesus is the leader of 'the Movement!' When He ascends, Peter takes on this responsibility. By Acts 15, the leadership had passed to James, who gives his singular authoritative 'judgment,' bound to all the churches.

05

The Dream Of The Evangelization Of The Nations In This Generation

If the world was evangelized in the first century, we can certainly do it again in the twenty-first century! This will be accomplished through every disciple-making disciples.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

— Matthew 28:19-20

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

— Acts 1:8

The Holy Spirit gives us the power to evangelize the nations! They did it in their Generation! (Colossians 1:6, 23)

We must do it in ours!

How We Live It Out

Our Ministry Statement

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

— Acts 2:42-47

Our goal is to be a church full of disciples who love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength and who love each other just as Jesus loved us (Matt 22:37-40, Jn 13:34-35).

We want to reach out within our community and share our faith so that through us, God can make disciples of all the nations around us (Matt 28:18-20) and bring them into a loving, serving, and maturing body of Christ (Eph 4:11-16).

We emphasize these 7 Core Areas of our Ministry:

Discipling

We are committed to baptizing people into Christ (Acts 2:38, Eph 4:1-7) and to growing, training, and equipping disciples for kingdom life (Eph 4:11-16). We recognize the biblical mandate to help each other grow and we continue to believe in accountability, seeking and giving biblical advice, and corporate prayer.

Family

We are the family of God! We share a common faith, common blood, and a common love for God and each other. Our commitment is to love, forgive, encourage, serve, lay down our lives, and share our possessions and hearts (Rom 12, 1 Cor 12, Gal 5:13-26).

Worship

The primary function of the family of God is to have a lifestyle and attitude of worship (Matt 4:10, Jn 4:23-24, Rom 12:1-2). In our worship services, we want to experience the presence of God as we express honor, gratitude, awe, humility, and brokenness before Him.

Holiness

God desires us to come out and be separate so we can show the world his holiness (Lev 11:45, 1 Thess 4:7). As Jesus is the Lord of our lives, we are committed to having a passion for God and a hunger for righteousness.

Serving

Our church is built on the biblical concept of ministering to the world's hurts and needs. Jesus aimed to give up his life for others (Jn 12:24-26). The servant-heart of sacrifice is deeply rooted in OT and NT themes.

Evangelism

We are committed to testifying that Jesus is our Lord and Savior (1 Pet 2:9-10; 1 Pet 3:15).

Benevolence

Like the first-century Christians who shared everything with each other and gave it to anyone in need (Acts 2:42-45), we are committed to benevolence.
